Battling hordes of zombies has been a favorite past-time for many gamers over the years, not matter where they emerge from.

Whether it's on the sandy beaches of a tropical island, lurking around eerie graveyards or aboard spaceships, zombies create an intense atmosphere. Their docile ways can make the undead seem simple and easy to avoid, but add some beefed-up zombies and ones that can run, and you've got a problem on your hands.

We take a look at some of top zombie Steam PC games that you should check out!

Dying Light

Dying Light is a first-person, action survival game set in the vast open-world Harran. As the protagonist, voiced by Roger Craig Smith, players will roam across the city devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help defeat the hordes of flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created.

The game heavily features weapon crafting and parkour, which is an essential part of moving around the world quickly and avoiding dreaded zombie hordes. Searching for supplies and helping fellow survivors is a dangerous task overall, but when the sun goes down, you'll need to be prepared for a lot more.

Don't let fear take over, grab your supplies and head back to your nearest base before the 'Volatiles' stop you dead in your tracks, literally. The game has since been updated with a huge expansion - Dying Light: The Following - in which players can ride buggies and have access to new characters, a new story campaign, weapons, and new and improved gameplay mechanics. Both the main game and DLC expansion are available in the Dying Light: Enhanced Edition - which also includes a skin pack DLC and Season Pass.

Dead Island

Caught in the midst of an epic zombie outbreak on the tropical island of Banoi, players will
experience a truly horrifying adventure as they embark on missions to help fellow survivors in Dead Island.

Go it alone or team up with friends in online co-op as you explore more of the island, taking on the likes of the Ram - a straight-jacket wearing brute - and the Floater - a overweight swollen that spits acid bile. Improve your character's skills by upgrading them to help you fight off flesh-eaters and upgrade weapons to break a few skulls.

Resident Evil

When you think of zombie video games, surely Resident Evil is the series that springs to mind. The more recent editions to the franchise have been more about a parasite-type virus and many would say that has moved away from the conventional zombie genre, but you can't go wrong with the original game - gloriously remastered for Steam PC.

A special forces team is sent to investigate some bizarre murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City, but after being chased by a pack of mutated dogs into a nearby mansion, it's clear that this is more than just a killing spree.

This classic action adventure will have you heart thumping fast as zombies and various bosses emerge from around the mansion and surrounding areas.

Dead Effect

After being awoken from a cryogenic sleep, Jane Grey - an elite member of Unit 13 aboard the ESS Meridian - is about to find out that something has gone terribly wrong. In epic single-player Dead Effect, players can control Jane Grey or Gunnar Davis through 12 missions, exploring the ESS Meridian and its undead crew.

There's also survival mode, where players must survive for a set amount of time - killing as many enemies as possible - and biohazard mode, which involves players defeating waves of enemies.

State of Decay

Explore an open-world full of undead and be sure to stay alive in State of Decay. This game won't hold you by the hand as once you've fallen to the hordes of flesh-eaters, you'll lose your character and equipment and have to begin your journey once again.

Zombie Army Trilogy
